Halo: Campaign Evolved praised for the engine, criticised for empty levels
Digital Foundry called it one of the strongest Unreal Engine 5 implementations around. The complaint is singular.
The remake of the first Halo, made for the game's 25th anniversary, has landed generally well. Digital Foundry called Halo Studios' work one of the strongest examples of Unreal Engine 5 currently available. Re-recorded dialogue, remastered music, sprint and three new prequel missions come with it.
The complaint is the same everywhere: the levels remain as they were designed in 2001 — vast and empty. The lighting changed; the layouts did not.
This is the fork every remake reaches. You can update the picture without touching the design, but then what the technology used to hide comes into view: in 2001 emptiness read as scale, because there was nothing available to fill it with.
